When cleaning, remodeling or moving, you’ve probably run into household items you no longer use, but that are still in great condition. Whether it’s the windows you just replaced, furniture that no longer fits your style or an old TV, you may wonder, “Should I donate this?

Habitat ReStores generally accept a variety of used household items, home goods and surplus construction materials. Most gently used items can either be donated, recycled or repurposed. Learn how to make the most of your item by following these guidelines.

Donate, reuse or recycle?

Do you have gently used home goods or leftover building materials you don’t need? You might be able to donate them to a local Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Explore our guide below to determine if your item can be donated, reused or recycled.  

Furniture, housewares and home decor, household appliances

  • Furniture, housewares and home decor should be in gently-used or like-new condition.
  • Household appliances should be less than 10 years old, in good working order, with all of their included parts.

Kitchen and bath fixtures, cabinetry

  • Items must be complete, in good condition, with all of the necessary pieces, hardware and parts.

Building materials, flooring and tile

Lighting, doors and windows

  • Salvaged lighting, doors and windows are popular purchases by thrifty DIYers. 
  • Check to make sure there are no cracked, missing or unframed single-paned glass panels.

TVs and electronics

  • TVs must be less than 5 years old.
  • Rear projection TVs are not accepted.

Clothing

  • Check with your local Habitat ReStore to see if they accept clothing donations.

Mattresses and box springs

  • Mattresses and box springs are not accepted.
